Feature Flower for May - Tulips

Although it seems to have taken forever this year, spring has finally arrived in Wisconsin. Just this weekend I was able to pick a gorgeous bunch of tulips from my yard. So what better feature flower for May than the Tulip.

Botanical Name:  Tulipa, (TEW-li-pa)

Tulips are a cup shaped flowers grouped into four categories; single-rounded, double-rounded, parrot (fringed), and lily flowered (pointed petals). Flowers are usually 2-4" atop 12-24" stems. Tulips get their name from the Turkish word tulband, for turban. They have their origin from Central and Western Asia. It wasn't until the late 16th century that tulips were introduced to Holland. Since then, Holland has dominated the world tulip market.

Tulips are the third most popular flower after roses and chrysanthemums. There are now over 3,000 different registered varieties of cultivated Tulips. It's no wonder they are so popular, besides the different styles they are available in white, lavender, purple, pink, magenta, red, peach, orange, yellow, green and bi-colors.

Interesting Fact - Tulips will continue to grow about 1 inch per day even after they are cut.

Good news for brides - With the help of imports and greenhouses tulips are available year round. With the peak season being November - May. Tulips symbolize imagination, dreaminess, perfect lover, and a declaration of love. Tulips make a beautiful addition to any bouquet or offer a classic romantic feel all on their own.
